Today’s society

Published June 13, 2015 by Iphis of Scyros

We live in a society of people who have too much time on their hands.

I realize that sounds like someone who lives in a glass house throwing a very large stone (and to a certain extent it is) but really, things are nuts!

There are “reality” shows about the stupidest things.  (And I am proud to say that I do not watch them.  In fact, I don’t watch any television, apart from “Agents of SHIELD”/”Agent Carter” and “Doctor Who.”  Oh, and DC was starting something soon with Rory as a Time Agent or something; that looked promising. (Okay, he’s not Rory anymore, but I don’t know his character’s name…)  But mostly, I don’t watch television.)

And things that wouldn’t have gotten ink on even the slowest of slow news days in the past now get news features online and hordes of people commenting on them.  One of the employees at the museum was reading out to us part of an article about an old woman who was nearly arrested in Texas for not mowing her lawn.  Seriously?  Someone thought that was newsworthy?   Seriously?  “News of the Weird” maybe, but…no, it’s not weird enough for “News of the Weird.”  It’s just boring.  Does no one have anything better to do?

I guess, like me, no one wants to do the better things they need to do.  But unlike me, many of them don’t have more worthwhile ways to waste their times, like video games, manga, anime, rabidly writing weird fiction, et cetera.
