A Question about User Names

Published October 10, 2015 by Iphis of Scyros

Okay, off-subject, I know.  But I recently realized that I could change my WordPress user name.  And since it’s both inaccurate — I’m no longer 39 — and kind of, well, embarrassing, I thought I should change it.  (Though don’t ask me “to what” because I’m not sure yet.)

But then it occurred to me:  would that confuse people?  I mean, not the people who are reading my blog posts.  I realize that a name change on the writer of the post would at most cause a momentary perplexity, followed by the realization that I simply changed my use name.  (How many other people are pointlessly verbose in the same way I am, after all?  And obsessed with Greek myths?  Gotta be a small percentage.)

What I’m worried about is confusing the people who only know me by my comments on their blogs.  Would my gravatar image be enough to make them realize it’s me, or would they think I was a total stranger using the same image as someone who frequently comments on their blog?

I’m just not sure how to proceed.  (Which isn’t too big a deal at the present moment, since I’m not sure what I want to change the user name to, anyway.)

Any thoughts?

  • I think if you’re not happy with it, you should definitely change it! You could always add an HTML signature to the bottom of your comments that acknowledges the change, eg.

My wordpress site (formerly known as 39 Years Lame).

    I think that’s what I’d do 🙂
