Lately, I’ve been reading one of the books I never got to last semester, My Dearest Friend; Letters of Abigail and John Adams, and I came across a very early bit that I thought I’d share for this week’s Words Crush Wednesday.
Courage is a laudable, a Glorious virtue in your Sex, why not in mine? (For my part, I think you ought to applaud me for mine.)
And that’s from a letter dated April 16, 1764, before they were married.
BTW, either the spelling of words in the English language had not yet been finalized, or they were sometimes very sloppy in their letter-writing. (Presumably the former.) Sometimes the punctuation (and, as you can see, often the capitalization) is not what you would normally view as “correct” in modern English as well.
