Man, this is embarrassing! I even made good time yesterday!
(I blame my terrible plumbing; it takes so long for my bathtub to fill that my bath took more than two hours, by which time it was 11:30 at night and I was too tired to remember to post my daily time log for Camp NotNaNo.)
Anyway, I didn’t accomplish much in terms of writing (though I did move on from the France-like country to the Germany-like country (well, actually it’s more like Prussia with some Bavaria and large dash of Scandinavia), but I spent a long time working on the map.
Which might have anyone who actually reads these boring updates thinking I’m being a hypocrite, considering how I rail against the new NaNo site for thinking we’re graphic designers rather than writers, but my results make it super-duper clear that I have less than no skill in the graphic arts.
Having at one time tried to sketch out a world map on my own, I realized I needed some kind of map generation program. I found a couple of good ones, though I never got them to generate a whole world map, just a continent or two. So I saved a whole bunch of these randomly generated maps and tried to fit them together as one….
It….um…turned out badly. And it doesn’t help, of course, that none of the continents have names yet. :p (I should credit the map generators, but I’m on my phone, and that info is on my laptop. I’ll add in that info next time I boot up that laptop.) (The four larger continents came from Roll for Fantasy’s Map Creator. The smaller ones (notOceania and the one with the names of countries) on the right edge of the map came from Azgaar’s Fantasy Map Generator.)
I also tried to place all the countries in the maps of the European and African equivalent continents, using rough squiggles to represent borders.
That one doesn’t look too good, either, but it’s at least roughly workable. (Not showing the African-analogue map because it’s a lot worse, especially in that most of the countries don’t have names yet.) It’s all served its intended function, though, to give me a concrete idea of what countries have direct lines of travel to what other countries.
Oh, there was one big change to the world map after I took that picture, though. See the big island next to “notNorthAmerica”? That’s been moved over to between “notEurope” and the Asian-analogue continent where I actually labelled the countries instead of just the continent. And now that island is my Mesopotamia-analogue. That’s going to make some rather radical cultural differences! :p
At some point far down the line, I intend to find someone who is an artist and see if they’ll draw me a map that doesn’t suck.
So, yesterday’s time was ~1:23
Total time in July to date: 16:41:53.88
